Agreed. Trying to leave Sketchup behind permanently, and I miss this feature as well. Sketchup calls them Components and yes when you change one, they all change.

Mark McCoy 100% agree. I'm trying to do exactly the same thing but without instances (Sketchup Components) its a bit hopeless. You have 100 copies of something in a model and what, you have to manual replace each one to change something? I suspect their Parasolid licence doesn't allow it, just like it I think does for history.

Linked copies

It would be cool if one would have two copy'n'paste variants: One is creating an independent copy of the source object - and the other a linked copy.
When editing linked geometry, all copies change accordingly.
Local transformations that are applied additional to each linked copy could be position, rotation and possibly scaling.
Optimally such linked copies could even work across documents. That way one could easily maintain part-assembly relationships and one can create part libraries where usages get automatically updated in case of corrections. (Like linked objects can work in Blender)

This would be a game changer!

Including this ESSENTIAL feature would be a HUGE step forward!!

This would be a game changer for this already incredible piece of software, IMO. To add some detail, I can see this working in a few different ways:
- inside a project, being able to create instance-able objects (similar to when you group items currently) for things like common hardware used throughout. This seems like the most simple approach as it doesn't create a hierarchy between separate projects
- when importing another project file into the next one, having it remain a consolidated object which can be used any number of times as a bundled/single object instance (still an improvement over what happens now, but not quite ideal yet)
- when importing a plasticity file for inclusion in another project, including it as a REFERENCE to the previous file, rather than embedding it as a separate (and now potentially diverging) copy, WITH the option to later refresh this embedded reference, if/when the referenced file is changed. This would be a MAJOR improvement and time saver.

Instances would enable so much better organization. Especially when coupled with the ability to reference an instance from another file on disk. I really like the approach of Blender and Rhinoceros in this regard.

This! It's one of the biggest missing features IMO.

100%. Personally I can't use it for what I need without them.

Having an instances together with "custom pivot" feature and being able to keep it linked to Blender via Blender bridge would bring creating animated mechanical models to whole another level.
That would be a game changer for many, I believe!
